1996 Ford Explorer Rebuild
Hey Everyne,
I picked up a 5.0 from a 1996 Ford Explorer with 160,000 for $200 on CL that I'm going to rebuild and the plan is to install it this winter in my 92' Miata.
I'm trying to keep the rebuild on the low end of costs so no big stroker kit or turbo.
This is my first car motor rebuild other than rebuilding a 2-stroke mercruiser 175 hp so some of this is all new to me.
1. If I have to bore out the cylinders (.20 to .30 over?) what budget freindly pistons and rings are a good option?
2. I'll use a cam from a mustang...what years should I look for?
3. Will the rockers, valves and springs from the GT explorer heads work with a mustang cam? If not what should I be looking for?
4. What is the difference between using a distributor and coil packs? Explorer was set up with coil packs.
5. Already found an oil pan and timing cover from a Mustang on CL for $10
6. ECU should be the A9l what years should I be look for?
7. The inside of the intake has build up of crude that needs to be cleaned out...I suppose this should cleaned at a machine shop?
Thanks for input
Erik

This is my first time i visit here. I found so many entertaining stuff in your blog, especially its discussion. From the tons of comments on your articles, I guess I am not the only one having all the leisure here! Keep up the good work.
