Default LS(x) oil pan

Hey, I'm planning a LS swap and the $800+ price tag of the LS swap oil pan from V8R was a bit much for me. I did some research and found a steel pan from moroso - part number 20140 specifically (not the A version). Its outer depth in the front is 1 - 13/16". It seems shallow enough but I dont know the depth of the V8R pan.

If anyone could say for sure it is shallow enough or has the dimesions of the V8R it would be a big help.

I just want to say the v8r pan is a very nice well-designed pan, I'm just looking for a less expensive alternative for a street machine.

Thanks,

Steve

I used the Boss Frog kit and was able to use the C5 - batwing pan without mods to the pan. But I did have to notch the Boss Frog K-Member .. you can find these pan on eBay for low $$$$. I paid $75 +$25 shipping.

Hos that for ground clerance!

Is the oil pan part of the block's structure? I know it is on some other aluminum blocks. If it is I'd think twice about substituting it for sheet metal...

As you all know, I'm a Ford guy. Ignore my comment if it's irrelevant...

My understanding from everything I have read put out by GM is that Yes it is part of the block's structure. I agree with you those who put the thin steel pan on are running the risk that the block may under the right force deform or crack.

That played a large role in my selection of the C5 pan as it was designed for this LS block.

If you decide to go with the BF or V8Roadster K-member you can probably get away without any mods to the k-member by trimming back the wings of the pan and having someone weld end plates on them. Of course you'd probably then need a brand spanking new pan as a used one will have residual oils soaked into the aluminum.

Thanks for your responses.

Yes it is supposed to add "support" to the strength of the block. I cant say for sure since I didnt design the engine but I HIGHLY doubt GM would would risk the integrity of the engine on the oil pan.

Modracer33 thanks for sharing your idea and I like the resourcefulness of using that specific pan, but my plan is to cut as few things as possible since everything thats cut and welded is another place that could fail.

My whole plan was to find an alternative that could fit for a resonable price and not have to modify anything.

So my question remains of if anyone knows the depth of the V8R pan or can say if the moroso pan I mentioned will for sure fit.

Thanks

Steve

I'm going to dig this one back up because I have the same question. I'm not interested in modifying any other oil pans or the k-member. Its either buy the V8R oil pan or find a cheaper alternative. So does anyone know if this Moroso pan will work?

I can't recall anyone ever trying the Moroso. I know the Mast motorsports has been discussed but I don't know if anyone has tried it either.

Keep in mind that the Moroso does not include the pickup tube which is another $105. It also requires the remote filer setup.

In a perfect world, this would work but I think the front of the v8R pan is much shallower:

Has anyone tried the V8R pan with the remote filter option? It is seems to be a much lower cost pan than the standard screw on style.

The remote filter pan on V8roadsters site is actually made by Kevko Racing. I contacted Kevko directly and had them make me something similar to the V8R pan but with a few modifications. Ended up getting it even cheaper.

It is a good way to go if you want to save a couple bucks or add in a cooler in the future. Plan on another $150 bucks for the 10an braided line, remote filter mount and all the hose ends to make it work.

Yes I have the V8R remote pan and it is made by Kevko. If you have not seen it there is a pretty good discussion on pans here:
https://www.v8miata.net/general-miat...-oil-pans-801/

I don't think the Autocraft pan would quite fit with out shimming the engine up a little. I think the Kevko LSF pan would work but need to verify with them how shallow the front of it is. Check out the thread.

Boss Frog kit with stock F-body oil pan. Needed no mods and has no clearance issues. Be sure to follow torque settings and bolt sequence when attaching the pan!
