Hey im new to the forum I a have 90 miata with a stock LS1 from a 00 z28. Car has boss frog front and rear sub frame with an 8.8 etc etc
Anyway my question is do any of you have side exhaust that exits through the quarter panel right behind the door. Ive seen some pictures of cars that did and im wondering how difficult it was and what kind of clearance issues they had. My current exhaust set up is a 2.5 inch , 2 in 2 out magnaflow muffler, no cats, and ceramic coated hooker headers. Because of the lack of clearance with the boss frog rear end set up I just have turn downs right after the muffler. Its starting to drive me crazy, my ears ring after driving long distances and the droan is equally annoying. I installed dynamat but it didnt really help that much. I think that getting the exhaust out from under the car so the noise doesnt reverberate between the car and the ground will help quite a bit. Does anyone have any advice?

That would be my preference but I would have to find a really really good exhaust shop... way above my skill level. Clearance on the back is tight here are some pics from swaptastic.com of a similar set up.

These things look kind of dumb but they made a HUGE difference in my car getting rid of the drone and rapping.

The Boss Frog rear is notoriously hard to route exhaust through. I recently saw a builder of a non-kit car use mesh sections of pipe before the rear and then hard mount the rest of the system. It might be something to think about. Hard mounting it would mean you could forget about bushings and isolators which could make routing a bit easier.

I think that Buster (former owner of Grand Muffler in Smyrna, Ga.) did that system for Nathan. I had mine done by James (former employee at Grand Muffler) at Cherokee Tire in Canton, Ga.. Mine has high flow cats, X-pipe, dual 2.5" pipes (with removable sections between headders & cats for transmission access) & Magnaflow mufflers with polished stainless tips.

Stout design, but no room for exhaust. Street cars run exhaust to the back bumper, and performance exhaust is all smooth tube, not dented for clearance.

I had another thought in this last night. If your engine was not in an SLP / Bola car it had a single 2 3/4 pipe over the axle in it. I'm not real clear on how area of a pipe works but it would seem to me you could go all the way down to 1 3/4 pipes and still have more volume then it had in the stock Camaro. Don't know if that small of pipe would work over the axle any better.
My other thought (and this is WAY out there) is to split it after the muffler like tail pipe tips do into 2 small pipes. Maybe 1 1/2 or so. Then run one over and the other under the axle on each side and bring them back together in a single larger pipe. Yeah I said it was way out there but just tossing ideas on the white board!
