To chip or not to chip...

To chip or not to chip...
That's my big question....
My 347 monster has 30lb injectors feeding afr 185 heads...rpm intake with 75mm throttle body and e303 cam...T5 tranny...Runs good...often get knocks before it's warmed up...rare knocks but they do exist after warmed up...unfortunately I can't pull codes off the computer...
so any thoughts on what a custom tune would do for my street performance?
I'm thinking supercharger later in the year, maybe.
Thanks for any input.
PS...There is a shop near me who tunes fords and has a dyno chip package deal for 450 bucks...SCT chip. Any comments on this or any other chip choice?

I had mine tuned here: Injected Engineering: There's a Reason Our Customers Will Drive Eight Hours to See Us. They know their stuff!

I brought my 94 Mustang Gt to Dez racing in Seekonk. Did a custom tune on the dyno. 94-95's are bears when modified without a chip. The car idles great, has excellent driveability at gets 24 mpg on the highway with 3.55 gears. (BTW, it has a 347ci also with 10.8:1 compression)
Dez has done a lot of articles for Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords. He has a good reputation in the NE ford community. (as far as I can tell, anyway)
I would do it, if I you. Just by updating the stock programming to take into account the increased displacement, injector size and MAF and leave the rest of the stock tune will eliminate probably 90% of your issues. On the dyno he can optimize the other 10%.
Almost forgot to mention he used sct software. What shop do you have in mind?
Hope this helps

Dude where's my horse power...
Today was dyno day...just looking to get a baseline....Didn't take it to a pro tuner...nothing like that...just two guys and a dyno...
At 30 degrees total advanced timing I was at 260 rwhp and 300 ft/lb...good steady graph of hp/tq all the way to 5k rpm....
I rolled in there originally timed at 12 initial (spout) ...and that was the reason for most of my issues. At twelve inital my total at 3k rpm was only 18. This still doesn't make sense to me, but I'm moving on ( or maybe I need to investigate this...I just don't see how the computer would have only been adding 6 degress at 3k rpm..more reasons to question the stock computer? but are the sct guys adding timing with their custom tunes?? more confusion...I'm going to just move on)...That first pull with 12 inital 18 total was producing suck *** rwp (209)...
Good bump up just with the timing change, but still a little disappointed in the final output (can't you buy a scion with 260 hp?) , but the final final word is THIS:... I step on the gas and go fast...get to 4k rpm and I'm already going too fast...shift repeat and I begin to feel better...so it's a good thing.
No chip & pump gas, car really seems to pull well, good throttle response, no clue on mpg... but with my set-up I'm wondering if maybe I'm leaving something on the table at 30 degrees. I should have pushed for another few pulls at more total advance to get an idea of where the air to fuel ratio was and what kind of power I was getting at say 32/34/36 total advance...
To do: play with new advanced timings... maybe look at an sct set-up...find a pro ( go broke) & make a run at that 300 hp mark (I am an amateur) ..of course to be fair, my other options are 1. sell the car or now 2. stop trying to go faster and just be happy....or just die...
Question to the 347 crew...How much ticking noise do you guys get from your engines? ANY? I've got a noise coming from my drivers side valve cover area. ..I'm running with the Monster shorty headers...Exhaust? Fuel injector? valve rocker? Just normal 347 doin it's thang? ..Just curious if anyone has a quiet 347...

A couple of questions:
You said that you had 12 degrees initial with spout removed and 18 degrees total @3k rpm. You go on to say you ended up with 30 degrees total. How?
I am not sure you would ever get engine knock (detenation) @ any rpm with only 18 degrees of total timing.
Are you just short shifting @ 4k or is the engine running out of power? Even though you have an E303 (ideal for a 302) you should be able to rev up at least to 5k. Your intake is begging for a bigger cam. ( trust me I know about Ct emissions)
Just to help you relate my 347 has twisted wedge heads an Anderson Motorsports cam similar to your e-cam Gt-40 intake and 36lb injectors. After getting a custom tune (@ Dez racing as I mentioned earlier) the engine has generous torque from off idle through 5k. 310 rwhp but because of the cam and intake power really falls off above 5100rpm. I have since switch to a twisted wedge intake. Car pulls to 5500 rpm and it feels like it has more power and torque everywhere.
With a custom tune they will adjust the timing tables and fuel curves for the entire rpm range and rpm vs load. As I said they will tell computer its a 347 and has 30lb injectors and what MAF you have. After that you won't believe how differently the car behaves.
My car idles all day long (doesn't load up) and has great driveability. No bucking or stalling. It really behaves well.
I track my mpg. In town it gets about 15mpg but on a couple of highway trips I get 23-24 mpg.
Mine ticks not sure if its from the headers or injectors. For me its from all the cylinders so I haven't tried to track it down.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the update...I've been driving the car now for a few weeks without any thing more to report...I'm going to leave the timing as is until I make a trip to Dez tuning...Budget permitting late sumer...One more question KOSTOND...can you give me any info on pricing for the tune? I'm thinking 500-700 for an sct set-up...single tune with dyno time included....Again, thanks for all the great info...
